Tracking your medicines safely at home

September 12, 2026 · 5 min read

Most medicine problems at home are ordinary ones: a dose missed after a schedule change, two products containing the same ingredient, or an over-the-counter remedy that works against a prescription.

Keep one current list

  • Name, dose, how often, and why you take it.
  • Include over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
  • Update it the same day anything changes, and take it to every appointment.

Record doses as you take them

Marking a dose taken, skipped, or late gives your clinician a real picture. A blood pressure that will not settle looks very different when several doses were missed that week.

Common things worth asking about

  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen, which can raise blood pressure and affect the kidneys.
  • Decongestants in cold remedies, which can raise blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Two products containing acetaminophen at the same time.
  • New supplements, which can interact with prescriptions.

Never start, stop, or change a dose based on an app or an article. Bring the question to your prescriber or pharmacist.
