Oxygen
What is a normal oxygen level for older adults?
October 5, 2026 · 5 min read
A pulse oximeter clips on your finger and estimates how much oxygen your blood is carrying (SpO2). Most healthy adults, including older adults, read 95% or higher. Some people with lung conditions have a lower personal target set by their clinician.
Getting an accurate reading
- Rest for a few minutes and keep your hand warm and still, below heart level.
- Remove nail polish or artificial nails on that finger.
- Wait for the number to settle, then record it.
- The FDA notes oximeters can be less accurate on darker skin tones — watch for symptoms, not just the number.
When to seek care
- Call your provider if readings stay at 92% or lower, or keep dropping.
- Get emergency help for trouble breathing, bluish lips or face, chest pain, or new confusion — whatever the number says.
