How often should you check your blood pressure at home?

September 12, 2026 · 5 min read

There is no single right answer — the useful frequency depends on why you are measuring. But there is a wrong answer: checking constantly. Repeated readings through the day usually measure your anxiety, not your blood pressure.

If you were recently diagnosed or changed a medicine

This is when home monitoring helps most. The AHA suggests two readings one minute apart, morning and evening, for about a week — ideally the week before an appointment. That pattern gives your clinician enough consistent data to judge whether treatment is working.

If your pressure is stable and controlled

Once your numbers are at goal, many people can ease off to a few days a week, or a week of readings before each appointment. Agree on the plan with your care team rather than deciding alone — some conditions warrant closer watching.

Signs you are checking too often

  • You measure whenever you feel worried, dizzy, or stressed.
  • You repeat readings until you get a number you like.
  • A single unusual reading changes your whole day.

If this sounds familiar, agree on set times with your clinician and stick to them. Blood pressure naturally swings 20-30 points through the day; chasing those swings adds worry without adding information.

Today's Vitals shows your readings as weekly averages and trends, so one odd number stays in context. Educational only — your care team sets your schedule.
