What is the best time of day to check your blood pressure?

Blood pressure follows a daily rhythm: it rises before you wake, runs higher in the morning, and usually dips overnight. Because of that rhythm, when you measure changes what the number means.
Morning: before medicine and breakfast
A morning reading — after you empty your bladder, before caffeine, food, or your blood pressure medicine — shows your baseline and whether your medication covers the early-morning surge, when heart attack and stroke risk is highest.
Evening: before bed
An evening reading shows how your pressure held through the day and how long your medicine lasts. Together, morning and evening give a far better picture than either alone.
Consistency beats perfection
- Measure at the same times each day so readings are comparable.
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes first, every time.
- Take two readings a minute apart and record both.
- Note anything unusual: a missed dose, poor sleep, illness, or a stressful day.
If your clinician asked you to track at specific times, follow their schedule — some medicines and conditions call for different timing.
